How to Create and Share a WiFi QR Code

Encode accurate WiFi settings, protect recoverable credentials and test guest-network access.

Use a guest network when appropriate

A WiFi QR is a convenient way to share credentials, not a way to hide them. Anyone who receives the code can recover its contents. For visitors, a separate guest network may be a better operational choice than sharing access to devices on your main network.

Match the settings exactly

Copy the SSID with its original capitalization and spaces. Select the security type used by the access point and enter the password without accidental leading or trailing characters. Mark a hidden network only if that matches the network configuration.

Check device support

WiFi action handling differs across phones and QR reader apps. Test the final code on the devices people are likely to use. If an app only displays text, offer the network name and an appropriate alternative way to connect.

Plan credential changes

Changing the WiFi password requires a new static QR code. Remove old printed copies to avoid confusion and treat saved screenshots as copies of the credential. Do not publish a private-network code on a public website.
